RAKSHA BANDAN

Significance

Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu custom marking the love and affection between brothers and sisters.

Raksha means Protection. Bandhan means bond.

Sisters tie colourful 'Rakhi' on the wrists of their brothers and ask their brothers to protect them from harm. Raksha Bandhan represents one of the most sentimental festivals of India. It is based on the emotional ties that bind a brother and sister in a very close bond - the most sacred relationship of life, without any ulterior motive or demand of any kind .Raksha Bandhan is a day of festivity and pure joy.

History & Legend :

In the days when gods warred with the demons, the consort of Indra (the Puranic King of the Heavens) tied a rakhi (a silken amulet) around his wrist, by virtue of which, it is said, the god won back his celestial abode from his enemies.
However, at most places, it celebrates the love of a brother for his sister. On this day, sisters tie rakhi on the wrists of their brothers to protect them against evil influences. In some places, before tying the rakhi, barley saplings are placed on the ears of the brother.

The rakhi are made of red and gold thread. They are a symbol of the bond between brothers and sisters. When the sisters give their brothers the rakhis, they give them candy to eat as well. The brothers give their sisters little gifts in return.
